What I Dislike About Our Industry, And Why We’re Not the Same

From time to time, I hear people say that all real estate agents are the same, and I can understand where that perception comes from. On the surface, the industry tends to look uniform: we advertise on the same platforms, use similar language, and make similar commitments. It can feel repetitive, and I don’t blame anyone for thinking every agent pulls from the same script.

But while the industry can appear generic from the outside, the reality is that not every team operates the same way. What happens behind the scenes varies hugely, and I truly believe the way our team works: the structure, the culture, the balance of strengths, is very different from what most people expect.

1. Our People: Experience, Capability, and a Team That Actually Grows

One of the biggest issues in real estate is the way teams are structured. Many function around one strong lead agent, while the rest of the team remains stuck in junior roles, often for years. If the lead agent steps away, everything becomes uncertain, because the associates haven’t been supported to grow into confident, independent operators.

Our team isn’t built that way. We have very low turnover, not because people feel trapped, but because they feel valued and supported. There’s a sense of stability here that comes from everyone being encouraged to develop their own strengths and build their own capability.

Both Jo and Wendy are great examples of that. They aren’t just “support” or “associates”, they’re fully capable, experienced agents. If I decided to walk away tomorrow, they would continue to run strong, successful businesses in their own right. That kind of depth within a team is rare in our industry, and it’s something I’m proud of.

Even behind the scenes, our admin and marketing team isn’t simply there to do the basics. They’re licensed, knowledgeable, and bring a level of creativity and innovation that shapes how we present our properties and communicate with clients. Everyone contributes something different, and the mix of skills blends together naturally. It creates an environment where work is shared, ideas are welcomed, and clients get the benefit of several sharp minds rather than just one.

2. Community: Something We Actively Show Up For

“Community involvement” gets thrown around a lot in real estate, but it doesn’t mean much unless there’s action behind it. For us, being part of the local community isn’t a marketing tool, it’s something we genuinely enjoy and invest time into.

We regularly run our local community BBQ, support schools, sponsor activities, and collaborate with businesses like Carters. These aren’t one‑off gestures; they’re part of our routine. We have contributed to the Christmas Box initiative, which helps families who need extra support during the festive season. And when local talent or groups, whether it’s Kade, local dancers, or community performers, need support, we try to be involved. It’s a simple way of staying connected to the people who shape the neighbourhood we work in every day.

This connection isn’t about transactions or branding; it’s about being present. When you spend time with the people around you, you start to understand the community’s real needs, values, and personality, and that naturally influences how you serve them.

3. Innovation: Keeping Pace With the Way the World Changes

Another challenge in our industry is that many agents still operate the same way they did a decade ago. There’s a lot of comfort in familiar methods, but sticking too tightly to old habits can hold clients back from better, smoother, more modern experiences.

We make a conscious effort not to fall into that pattern. Technology plays a meaningful role in how we run our business, not for the sake of being “trendy,” but because today’s buyers and sellers expect efficiency, clarity, and speed. Whether it’s implementing better systems, communicating in simpler ways, or making processes faster and more convenient, we’re always looking for tools that genuinely improve the experience.

We also enjoy incorporating creative technology where it makes sense, including using AI tools, like our Iceblock homes estimates. It’s just one example of how we try to stay adaptable and open‑minded rather than sticking to the past simply because it’s familiar.
